They’re not your regular tunnels, but a very complex network of tunnels which served as hospitals, living quarters, communication and supply routes, along with storage areas for that weapons and food from the Viet Cong guerrillas. We were holding constructed without using any sophisticated machines or tools only crude tools and human resilience. The Viet Cong guerrillas began building them throughout their proofed against the French within the late 1940s. Its original purpose was for communication between villages without getting detected with the French army. In 1960, however, Vietnam’s National Liberation Front began excavating and lengthening the tunnels. The tunnel system was very strategic causing the victory of the North Vietnamese Army up against the Americans.

These types of secret tunnels were built underneath American bases. Its importance wasn’t only limited by military purposes and also took over as hub from the Vietnamese community life because the Americans burned and destroyed villages. Everything proceeded normally to the Vietnamese during these tunnels where lovers met, couples marry, children attended school, and performances were held.

All had not been normal, obviously. The Vietnamese had to face the contests of just living in cramped quarters where ants, scorpions, vermin, and poisonous centipedes thrive. In addition ,, they need to ration everything because food, water, and also air were scarce. Quite often, they only got from the tunnels during the night to scavenge anything that will be useful for the city whether were supplies or food. When the Americans bombed and infiltrate villages, that they had to remain over these claustrophobic quarters for the purpose gave the look of endless days. Those living conditions made sickness, especially malaria, rampant. The truth is, it may be the 2nd major source of death one of the Vietnamese in that time. Aside from that, the majority of the tunnel inhabitants had serious cases of intestinal parasites.

As the Cu Chi tunnels had been a haven for that Vietnamese, it became a supply of frustration for that Americans. They’d tried various ways of detection and infiltration which are all an inability. The American troops conducted large operations burning villages, bulldozing jungles, and destroying rice paddies. They deployed planes which sprayed chemicals to defoliate other places burning it afterwards. Through all these offensive attacks, the Vietnamese guerrillas, combined with the remaining portion of the villages, remained safe and secured within their tunnels. In spite of this, only 6,000 Vietnamese from your original 16,000 tunnel inhabitants had the ability to survive as soon as the war.
